Preparation of Magnetic Chitosan Semi-Interpenetrating Thermo-swelling Hydrogels and Its Adsorption for Cr(Ⅵ) |

Abstract Chitosan semi-interpenetrating thermo-swelling hydrogels (Semi-INP) were synthesized by chitosan, acrylamide, and thermosensive macromonomer as raw materials and N, N′-methylenebis (acrylamide) as crosslinker through aqueous solution semi-interpenetrating network polymerization method. Magnetic chitosan semi-interpenetrating thermo-swelling hydrogels (Semi-INP/Fe3O4) were obtained by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into Semi-INP through an in situ chemical co-precipitation method. The prepared samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetry (TG), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermo-swelling property and the effects of adsorption time, temperature, absorbent dosage on the adsorption of Cr(Ⅵ) were investigated. Experimental results show Semi-INP/Fe3O4 were successfully prepared, and the hydrogels had good thermo-swelling properties. The adsorption removal of Cr(Ⅵ) increased with the increasing of adsorption time and adsorption temperature. The increase of absorbent dosage would raise the removal efficiency. At the condition of temperature is 70 ℃, pH=3.0, 10 g/L Semi-INP3/Fe3O4, and the initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentration is 10 mg/L, the removal efficiency could reach 98.03%.

About author:: Yu Wang received his Ph.D. degree in polymer che-mistry and physics from Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. Currently he is a professor at Guizhou Education University. His research interests focus on the design and synthesis of novel stimuli-responsive nanocomposite hydrogels, solution polymer materials and their applications in environmental catalysis and water treatment. He has published more than 50 journal papers, applied 15 national invention patents and 5 of them were authorized.
