Abstract Advanced materials have become the means and tools of the games between great powers, for its basic, strategic and leading role. Based on the analysis of the relationship between the key areas of national security and advanced materials, it is found that economic growth, military construction, energy development and technological leap cannot be separated from the strategic support of advanced materials. Further comparing the strong demands in reality with the construction and development of our advanced materials field, it highlights that our science and technology security are facing three kinds of problems, such as current neck jam problem, lack of momentum for future development and insufficient disruptive exploration. In view of the current situation of these problems, from the perspective of advanced materials, this paper puts forward four suggestions, such as planning strategic layout scientifically, attaching importance to scientific research achievement transformation, developing technology foresight and early warning technology security.
