Abstract To explore the corrosion fatigue characteristics of steel strand used for suspension cable under different loadings, the present work conducted a corrosion test for the steel strand under the artificially simulated conditions of alternating stress, static stress and non-stress, through the combinative apparatus of jack and salt fog test box. We first determined the steel strand’s corrosion states by means of quantitative histogram analysis, then launched the morphological and mechanical measurement after corrosion. Our experiment confirmed the steel strand’s corrosion extent sequence (experienced the same corrosion duration) with respect to the above mentioned three conditions: alternating stress condition, static stress condition and non-stress condition correspond to the high, intermediate and low corrosion extents, respectively. The corrosion duration, within a certain range, has an inconspicuous influence on the steel strand’s ultimate tensile stress, but while the corrosion progresses to more than 360 h, different loading conditions would lead to the diversity of the tensile strength’s variation trend. Also, only slight changes were observed in the fracture strength of the steel strand with a corrosion duration of less than 360 h, and thereafter the differentiation of fracture strengths emerges, with a particularly large decline of fracture strength under the alternating stress condition (individual specimen exhibits a fracture strength of only about 1 200 MPa after 720 h corrosion). It can also be indicated that the alternating stress and static stress result in pronounced decreases in the elongation at break of the corroded steel strand, the former of which holds a distinctly greater extent. The elongation at break with respect to the steel strand experienced salt fog corrosion under the non-stress condition also declines, but its change is relatively small compared to alternating stress and static stress.
