Abstract A series of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses matrix composites were designed by adding Nb with different volume fractions. The effect of Nb content on the microstructure and mechanical properities of as-cast and semi-solid amorphous composite materials were studied. It is demonstrated that the plastic strain of the amorphous composite material exhibits an S-type enhancement trend with the increase of the volume fraction of the crystalline phase (β-Zr phase). After the semi-solid isothermal treatment, the plasticity of the amorphous composite material increases, but its plastic growth rate decreases with the increase of Nb content. When D_C(equivalentdiameter)/X(free-pathspacing)≥0.65, the β-Zr phase volume fraction appears the minimum critical threshold of 35%, and the material plasticity begins to increase rapidly at this time; the β-Zr phase volume fraction exceeds 54%, for D_C/X≥1.5, and the plasticity of the material remains stable, which further shows that the plasticity of amorphous composites is related to the volume fraction of β-Zr phase.
