Abstract Electrospun alumina (Al₂O₃) nanofibrous mats were fabricated by combing sol-gel, electrospinning and high temperature calcination techniques, based upon aluminum isopropoxide (AIP) as precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as polymer template. The effects of calcination temperature on structural morphology, porous structure and decolorization property of Al₂O₃ mats were investigated. The decolorization mechanism and recycling/regeneration property of Al₂O₃ mats were also discussed. The results showed that the fabricated Al₂O₃ mats possessed good structure and morphologies with homogeneous fiber diameters. The Al₂O₃ mats calcined at 800 ℃ had the BET specific surface area of 82.7 m²/g, and demonstrated excellent adsorption rate on Reactive Red X-3B and Acid ANOSET© Yellow TB and reached about 72% and 93%, respectively. This might be due to electrostatic interactions between Al₂O₃ mats and dyes. The Al₂O₃ mats also exhibited good cycle stability and re-liability. This study suggests that the fabricated Al₂O₃ mats have potential applications for adsorption and decoloration on dye wastewater field.

About author:: Lingang Li received his M.S. degree in Jinan University in July 2006. He is currently an associate professor in West Anhui University. He is mainly engaged in the preparation and application of nano materials, focusing on the preparation, characterization and application of semiconductor nano materials.
Yibing Cai is one of the pioneers and leading scientists in the research field of “Thermal Energy Storage Mate-rials, Electrospinning and Nanofibers, Polymer Nanocomposites”. He is currently a Professor in Key Laboratory of Eco-textiles of Ministry of Education and College of Textile Science and Engineering at Jiangnan University (Wuxi, Jiangsu). His highest degree is a Ph.D. earned in 2007 from the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science at the University of Science and Technology of
China (USTC, Hefei, Anhui). His research has been supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Equipment Pre-research Joint Fund of Ministry of Education, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, Jiangsu Universities “Qing Lan” Project, Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, and Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China. He has published about 130 peer-reviewed articles (Indexed by SCI(E), including the ones that are currently accepted), 4 book chapters (including Functional Nanofibers and Their Applications and Surface Modification of Textiles that are published by Woodhead Publishing Limited), and 4 inventive patents in China.
