Abstract Ti-1100 as-cast alloys with different contents of Yb₂O₃ were prepared by tungsten electrode non-consumption arc furnace. The WDW-300 electronic universal testing machine was used to compress the alloy at temperatures of 25—800 ℃ and strain rate of 10^-4—10^-2 s^-1. The effect of Yb₂O₃ on the mechanical properties of Ti-1100 as-cast alloy was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the microstructure changes and compression fracture appearance of the alloy. The results show that the yield strength of Ti-1100 alloy was improved obviously by the addition of Yb₂O₃. At 25—600 ℃, the alloy with Yb₂O₃ content of 0.45wt% had the best compression yield strength improvement. At 800 ℃, the alloy had the highest compressive yield strength when the Yb₂O₃ content is 0.60wt%. The grain size and α lamellar spacing of Ti-1100 alloy were refined obviously by adding Yb₂O₃. The plastic deformation ability of the alloy with Yb₂O₃ content of 0.45wt% is obviously enhanced.
