Abstract: An innovative feeding system was proposed for the planar solidification casting to prepare large-sized multi-alloy ingots. The commercial software FLUENT was used to simulate the effect of the sprue distributions on the temperature field during the casting process. The numerical results revealed that the movable sprues can achieve a melt temperature uniformity significantly superior to the immovable sprues, thereby enabling the ascending solid/liquid interface to remain level during solidification preoess. The AA1070/AA7050 multi-layer ingot was fabricated by using movable sprue planar solidification casting method. The casting results showed that the interface of the composite ingot was clear and level, and metallurgical bonding was achieved with an elemental diffusion layer. The metallographic structure of 7050 part was uniform and there was no obvious macrosegregation along the vertical direction.
