Abstract The degree of blending of virgin and reclaimed asphalt in the recycling process of recycled asphalt mixtures directly affects the performance of the mixtures. To address the problem of difficulty in characterising the degree of blending of virgin and reclaimed asphalt in hot recycled mixtures, the degree of blending of virgin and reclaimed asphalt in the process of hot recycled was investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy in this work. Using SBS modified asphalt in the confocal laser scanning microscopic image of the red fluorescence effect, SBS fluorescent particles were employed to trace. Based on the confocal laser scanning microscopy, all the images within the surface blending layer of the recycled asphalt mixture after mixing were non-destructively acquire, and then the fluorescence intensity analysis of each layered image was conducted to obtain the concentration of SBS modified asphalt within the entire blending layer decay curve. The formula for calculating the degree of blending was proposed through the concentration change curve, and the homogenisation index was introduced to quantify the degree of diffusion homogenisation of the virgin and reclaimed asphalt in the recycled asphalt mixtures. The proposed method was exemplarily used to calculate two different blending ratios of hot recycled mixtures, showing that the virgin and reclaimed asphalt could not reach the ideal blending and diffusion state only at the end of the mixing.
