| Research Advances in the Preparation of Clay-based Composite Materials and Their Applications in Water Treatment |

Abstract Natural clay minerals have attracted considerable attention in adsorption sicence fileds due to their distinct layered microstructures, substantial specific surface areas, and abundant active sites. However, monocomponent clay adsorbents exhibit inherent limitations, including nonselective adsorption, particle aggregation, and constrained adsorption capacities. Strategic integration of clay matrices with complementary functio-nal materials enables the engineering of advanced composites with enhanced selectivity, tailored adsorption properties, and superior contaminant uptake performance for the remediation of aqueous pollutants. This review systematically examines three principal fabrication methodologies for clay-based hybrid adsorbents and evaluates the contaminant removal efficacy of three prominent composite systems in wastewater treatment applications. Particular emphasis is placed on their deployment in heavy metal ion sequestration, organic dye removal, and pharmaceutical contaminant elimination. The review concludes with a forward-looking perspective on emerging design paradigms and potential technological innovations in the development of functional clay composites.
