Abstract Bluecoke possesses advantages of well-developed pore structure and low cost as a catalyst support for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its poor conductivity and limited active sites restrict its catalytic performance. This study employed a strategy of introducing transition metal Fe into bluecoke-based electrocatalysts to improve their conductivity and increase the number of active sites. Using Shaanxi blucoke as the precursor and potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) as both iron source and activator, Fe/FexOy@BC catalysts were prepared through Fenton oxidation pretreatment followed by high-temperature carbonization activation. The influence of Fe loading on the structure and HER performance was investigated. Results demonstrated that Fe significantly enhanced the specific surface area and degree of graphitization of the bluecoke-based electrocatalysts. Among them, the Fe/FexOy@BC-0.3 catalyst achieved a specific surface area of 738.59 m2/g with an ID/IG ratio reduced to 1.012, forming a hierarchical pore structure dominated by mesopores and exhibiting improved graphitization. Electrochemical testing revealed that the Fe/FexOy@BC-0.3 catalyst exhibited excellent HER activity and stability in 1 mol/L KOH electrolyte, with an overpotential of 148 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2, a Tafel slope of 77 mV/dec, and only a 38 mV increase in overpotential after 10 000 cycles. The Fe/FexOy@BC catalysts demonstrated a synergistic catalytic mechanism between α-Fe and Fe2O3 during the HER process, while the semicoke support provided a conductive network and anchoring sites that optimized charge transport and active site exposure, thereby enhancing HER perfor-mance. An appropriate amount of Fe achieved uniform loading while avoiding particle aggregation, realizing an optimal balance among active site density, conductivity, and mass transfer performance.
