Abstract Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers as a protective layer were wrapped on the surface of silicon nitride (Si3N4) fibers using electrostatic spinning technology, to prepare PMMA/TPU@Si3N4 (P/T@Si3N4) yarn with a sheath-core structure. The morphology, stiffness, hook strength, and wear resistance of yarn were tested and characterized using a scanning electron microscope, 3D profiler, mechanical testing machine, and friction tester, respectively. Meanwhile, the morphology and properties of P/T@Si3N4 yarns were discussed in relation to the parameters of the nanofiber molding process. The results showed that increasing the horn rotation speed changed the nanofiber arrangement from random to highly oriented. However, excessively high rotation speeds caused loose and disordered structures. Increasing collection speed improved covering uniformity, but excessive speed exposed the core yarn structure. At 250 r/min horn rotation speed and 20 mm/s collection speed, the P/T@Si3N4 yarn exhibited a uniform surface structure with nanofibers highly aligned along the core yarn axis. Meanwhile, its stiffness increased by only 0.61% versus original Si3N4 fibers, while hook strength and wear resistance improved by 27.0% and 13.3%, respectively.
