Abstract Utilizing industrial waste residues to prepare alkali-activated cementitious (AAC) materials as soil stabilizers, replacing conventional cementitious materials like cement, achieves low-carbon and environmentally friendly outcomes. However, when AAC are used as stabilizers for soil treatment, the alkali content significantly impacts the performance of the stabilized soil. Therefore, this work focused on silty clay commonly encountered in northwestern Sichuan. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), water stability, and shear strength tests were conducted on stabilized soil prepared with five different stabilizer dosages and five alkali contents. The influence of alkali content on the properties of the stabilized soil was investigated, supported by microstructural analysis. The results indicated that increasing the alkali content enhances the UCS and water stability coefficient of the AAC-stabilized silty clay (AACSS) by 1.1—3.8 MPa and 0.03—0.20, respectively. Meanwhile, the cohesion c and internal friction angle φ increase by 2.52%—4.56% and 4.12%—10.56%, respectively. When the stabilizer dosage is 50% and the alkali content is 0.08, the UCS of the AACSS can reach 7.2 MPa, the water stability coefficient reaches 0.90, the c and φ reach 88.2 kPa and 49.4° respectively, which is suitable for the technical specifications for base courses under very heavy and extremely heavy traffic. Correlation analysis demonstrates that variations in alkali content has a substantial impact on the UCS, failure strain, and the water stability coefficient. Based on a comprehensive evaluation of the macroscopic properties and microstructural characteristics, the recommended alkali content ranges for AACSS is 0.05 to 0.08. Increasing the alkali content to the optimal range significantly enhances the activation efficiency of fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), leading to increased formation of aluminosilicate reaction products including needle-like gismondine, hydrocalumite, and amorphous N-A-S-H gel. These hydration products provide more effective encapsulation and coating of soil particles, resulting in improved structu-ral integrity and substantially enhanced engineering performance of the AACSS.
