Abstract Using recycled concrete powder to produce artificial aggregates reduces urban solid waste and partially replaces natural aggregates. However, artificial aggregates derived from recycled concrete powder exhibit lower mechanical strength and durability. This work investigated the effects of calcium carbonate whiskers (CW) as microscale reinforcements on the strength, density, and water absorption of artificial aggregates. The reinforcement mechanisms were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the aspect ratio of CW significantly influences its reinforcement efficacy. Specifically, as the dosage of CW1 (high aspect ratio) increases from 0% to 2.5%, the mechanical properties of the aggregates initially improve before declining. At an optimal dosage of 1.5%, the single-particle strength, cylinder compressive strength, and apparent density reach peak values of 2.36 MPa, 5.2 MPa, and 1 550 kg/m3, respectively. Increasing CW1 content reduces water absorption while increasing bulk density, with a significant negative correlation between these properties. SEM analysis reveals that CW enhances aggregate performance through a synergistic combination of filling, crack resistance, and bridging effects. Specifically, CW fills micro-pores and micro-cracks within the aggregates and provides tensile strength by bridging crack ends, significantly improving crack resistance.
