Abstract The types and forming mechanism of delamination in the process of drilling FRP are discussed. The finite element simulation analysis of various delaminations and the experimental research progress of FRP hole machining are expounded. The effects of ultrasonic vibration assisted machining, abrasive water jet machining, laser machining and water jet assisted laser machining technologies on delamination defects in FRP hole machining are discussed. The effects of tool types, process parameters and auxiliary processes in FRP drilling on delamination defects are analyzed. The delamination defect suppression criterion is presented by two methods of traditional technology and non-traditional machining technology. Finally, the shortcomings and future prospects of FRP hole machining technology research are summarized.
