Abstract There are many kinds of rare and precious metals such as Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Li in e-wastes. Recovery of rare and precious metals from e-wastes not only solves pollution problems, but also gains economic benefits. On the basis of recovery of rare and precious from e-wastes, the recovery methods and processes of rare and precious metals in e-wastes were reviewed systematically. Then the state-of-the-art on recovery of rare and precious metals from e-wastes were sketched. Furthermore, the advantages, existing problems and development direction for different types of recovery methods were given and the solution was raised. Finally, the trends of recovery of rare and precious from e-wastes were predicted. At present, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy occupy the main positions in recovery of rare and precious metals from e-wastes. Biometallurgy may gradually mature and start large-scale industrial application in recovery of rare and precious metals from e-wastes. The supercritical fluid technology will become supplementary technology during the processes of recovery of rare and precious metals from e-wastes.
