Preparation and Characterization of Polysiloxane/Polyacrylate Based Emulsion Under Microwave Irradiation |

Abstract Emulsion polymerization assisted by microwave irradiation (MI) owns many advantages such as high yield and energy/time saving. By using MI technique, polysiloxane/polyacrylate based emulsoid particles with evident core-shell structure was prepared via semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. A silane coupling agent of 3-methylacryl oxypropyltriisopropoxysilane (C-1757) was employed to affect structure and properties of the emulsoid particles. Related physiochemical techniques including transmission electron microscopy, size distribution analyzer and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the morphology and size distribution of the emulsoid particles, and the thermal stability of the resultant emulsoid film. It was concluded that, the emulsoid particles are made of polysiloxane cores coated by polyacrylate shells, their average size is smaller than 100 nm; with increasing the amount of coupling agent, the mean size of the emulsoid particles increases, and its distribution narrows; the water uptake of the prepared emulsoid film decreases, while its mechanical and thermal stability properties get potently improved.

About author: Li Maobtained her Ph.D.degree in materials from South China University of Technology in 2012. She is a lecturer in Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, focusing on the researches of functional polymer materials and polymer composite materials. Hui Heobtained her Ph.D.degree from the South China University of Technology (SCUT) in 1998. She serves as a professor in School of SCUT now. She has published more than 100 journal papers, and 10 natio-nal invention patents have been authorized. Her research interests are environmentally friendly wood-plastic composites, recycling and reuse of waste polymer materials, polymer/inorganic nanocomposite materials, toughening enhancement and functional modification of plastics. |
