Abstract Dye plays a key role in dye-sensitized solar cells. Designing a new photosensitizer is an effective strategy to improve the efficiency of self-assembled dye-sensitized solar cells. The most fundamental problem is the relationship between the structure of photosensitizer, the photoelectric properties of the assembled body and the photovoltaic performance. In this paper, two kinds of zinc porphyrin (ZnPx) with carboxyl group are introduced, and their coordination self-assembly double-layer dye-sensitized solar cells are studied. The results show that zinc porphyrin, a structure of ZnP1 (2+2), has better current and voltage, and shows a high efficiency of photoelectric conversion (η=1.68%). The self-assembly structure is also verified in this paper.
