Abstract Vanadium carbide acts as the nucleation base phase of ferrite or austenite in molten steel during solidification, which promotes the heteroge-neous nucleation of molten steel and refines the grain size of solidified structure. Based on the two-dimensional mismatch theory, the promotion of vanadium carbide compounds on the non-uniform nucleation ability of molten steel was calculated. The solid solution of vanadium carbide at different temperatures was calculated by thermodynamics. The refinement effect of vanadium carbide compounds on the solidification structure of molten steel was verified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis.
