Abstract The effect of rare earth (RE) Ce on microstructure and corrosion resistance of Al-Zn-Mg alloys was studied by optical microstructure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical tensile testing, exfoliation corrosion testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy testing and slow strain rate tensile, etc. The results showed that trace of RE Ce was effective to improve the corrosion resistance properties of high strength Al-Zn-Mg alloys. The fracture time of stress corrosion was prolonged and the sensitivity was significantly reduced. The addition of 0.04% (mass fraction, the same below) Ce exhibited a little effect on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy, but the corrosion resistance was improved distinctly. Thus the exfoliation corrosion was raised from E_C to N. The passivation film resistance was raised from 14 655 Ω·cm² to 36 839 Ω·cm². The sensitivity index of stress corrosion was reduced from 0.612 to 0.219.
