Abstract In order to avoid the precipitation of PbO and form a stable Fe3O4 protective layer, the oxygen in lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy need be controlled in a certain range due to the heavy corrosion of LBE on structural materials. In this study, based on the principle of oxygen control via gas phase, an oxygen control facility for stagnant LBE is designed and assembled used to investigate the gas oxygen control technology. The preliminary test results show that the eletromotive force (EMF) of oxygen sensor increases with the increment of the H2/H2O ratio in volume, indicating the decreases of oxygen concentration in LBE, and that at a specific H2/H2O ratio the oxygen concentration can be stabilized at a certain level. Therefore, through controlling and adjusting the H2/H2O ratio in cover gas of LBE, the oxygen concentration can be controlled in a certain range. This technique is expected to be used for the oxygen concentration control in the compatibility tests of LBE with structural materials and LBE dynamic loops.
