Study on Phase Structure of Micro-plasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings by Micro-Raman Spectroscopy |

Abstract Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings have been widely used in biomedical applications owing to their excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. However, the biological properties of HA coatings are closely related to their microstructure. In this study, HA coating and splats were deposited onto Ti-6Al-4V substrates by micro-plasma spraying technique. Microstructure of the single splat and the cross-section of HA coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase structure of splat and coating was investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy to obtain the information of PO43- and OH-. The phase distribution in the surface of splat and the change of phases along the direction of coating thickness were obtained by using curve fitting of micro-Raman spectra in 900—1 000 cm-1 frequency range. The results show that the splat mainly contains amorphous phase. Near the substrate-coating interface, coating is mainly composed of amorphous phase and decomposition phase (β-TCP) as well as a small amount of HA phase. With increasing distance from substrate-coating interface, the amorphous phase content decreased and HA content increased. Near coating surface, the decomposition phase and amorphous phase were slightly increased.

About author:: Xiaomei Liu received his B.E. degree in material forming and control engineering (welding) from Polytechnic College of Hebei University of Science & Technology in Jun. 2014. She is currently a Ph.D. student at Beijing University of Technology, focusing on the preparation and characterization of bioceramic coatings. Dingyong He received his B.E. degree and M.E. degree in welding from Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) in Sep. 1988—Mar. 1996 and served in College of Materials of Science and Engineering, BJUT till now. He received his Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the BJUT in 2004. He studied German at Tongji University and Beijing Language University in 2001—2002. 2004—2005, he performed collaborative research as visiting scholar at Materials Science Institute (IWW) and Surface Engineering Institute (IOT), RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He has published more than 200 journal papers, applied 100 national invention patents and 63 of them were authorized. His research interests include the fabrication of new cored wires for thermal spraying, metal powders for 3D printing, materials joining and surfacing, and thermal spraying cored wires for industry applications. |
